My friend Matthew Gibbs was tragically hit and killed while dragged down the road due to someone's negligence. Yet, no criminal charges were pressed to address his death. This personal horrific experience has shed light on a larger problem.The person responsible and his family feel money is away to make things better and they can buy their way out of jail for crimes he has committed. Due to our laws being too lenient, even when lives are lost or irreversibly impacted as a result of someone's actions. We plead for heightened strictness when it comes to sentencing criminals, regardless of the crime they have committed. Justice might not bring back the ones we lost, but it may provide closure and prevent future disregard of life. Our current judicial system's leniency sends a dangerous message to the populace, potentially inviting impunity for actions of harm, violence, and injustice. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, over two-thirds of offenders are re-arrested within three years of release. This disturbing trend points to a fractured system that necessitates urgent reformation. Not imposing adequate penalties neither deters criminal behaviour nor addresses the need for justice and accountability. Therefore, we call on our lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to review and enact more robust sentencing laws to ensure that every offense is adequately reprimanded and that the voice of victims does not go unheard.Please sign the petition and be a part of the change.
