Despite their touted environmental benefits, these vehicles present numerous safety concerns that cannot be overlooked. For instance, their quiet engines can pose a risk to pedestrians and cyclists who rely on sound cues to gauge the proximity of approaching vehicles. Furthermore, lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars have been known to catch fire during accidents or even while charging.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 40% more incidents of electric vehicle fires in 2019 compared to 2018. This alarming increase calls for immediate action from lawmakers and car manufacturers alike.

Electric cars are undoubtedly part of our future transportation system due to their potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, this should not come at the cost of public safety. We need stricter regulations and standards in place to ensure that these vehicles are as safe as they are environmentally friendly.
