Demand Stricter Laws and Enforcement Against Illegal Fireworks in Maui County

The Issue

We are a family living in central Kahului, Maui County. The use of illegal fireworks directly above our home needs to stop. The loud noises terrify our two infants, causing them to cry out of fear and confusion. Our pets - two dogs and a cat - also suffer from anxiety due to these unexpected explosions.

Illegal fireworks not only disrupt the peace but also pose significant safety risks. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year in the United States (NFPA). In addition to property damage, these incidents can lead to severe injuries or even loss of life of humans and animals.

Despite existing laws against unauthorized purchase and use of fireworks in Hawaii, many individuals continue this dangerous practice without facing any consequences. This is largely due to a generalized lack of enforcement and lenient punishments that do little to deter such behavior.

We urge Maui County officials and lawmakers to take immediate action on this issue. We need stricter laws against illegal firework usage along with more rigorous enforcement efforts from local authorities. Furthermore, we call for harsher penalties for those who violate these laws as a means of deterring future offenses.

This petition is about ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents and animals across Maui County who are affected by this issue during the holidays. Given the recent events on Maui, this law must be taken more seriously.

Please sign this petition if you believe that everyone deserves a safe environment free from unnecessary disturbances caused by illegal fireworks.
