Demand stricter consequences for motorcycle theft
The Issue
As an avid motorcyclist and daily commuter, I understand firsthand the deep sense of violation and helplessness that comes from having a motorcycle stolen. It's not just an inconvenience; it's a disruption that affects every aspect of life, from commuting to work to managing stress. The trauma experienced by the victims often goes unrecognized, yet it leaves a lasting impact both emotionally and financially.
Motorcycle theft is a pervasive problem that continues to rise year after year. According to studies, motorcycle thefts have increased by over 13% in the past two years alone. Youths and young adults are often behind these crimes, exploiting current lenient penalties. It's time for a change in the system that not only deters potential thieves but also ensures justice for the victimized individuals.
We are appealing for much tougher punishments for youths and young adults engaging in motorcycle theft. However, holding just the offender accountable isn't enough. The parents or carers of these young offenders should also face financial consequences, ensuring that they are ordered to replace the stolen motorcycle or cover the excess costs. Additionally, they should compensate for the loss of earnings, commuting expenses like taxi fares, and any other stresses incurred due to the theft.
We propose that these penalties be enforceable through an attachment of earnings or benefits to ensure compliance and accountability. Additionally, implementing a community service order can help rehabilitate young offenders and instil a greater sense of responsibility and empathy for their actions.
By holding all responsible parties accountable, we aim not only to deter future thefts but also to foster a community that values respect for others’ property. These changes will not only offer quicker compensation for victims but also ascend the issue of motorcycle theft to the level of seriousness it deserves, pushing for legislative and community support.
Join me in this fight for justice and safety for all motorcyclists and commuters. Sign this petition and help us advocate for the implementation of these much-needed changes to protect motorcycle owners and ensure offenders are suitably penalized.
