Demand South African intervention for detained delegates

The Issue

In a world where silence too often enables oppression, a group of courageous South Africans chose to act.

Answering the call of conscience, these delegates joined the Global Sumūd Flotilla, a peaceful humanitarian mission sailing in solidarity with the people of Gaza to challenge the illegal blockade, open a humanitarian corridor, and affirm the dignity and humanity of a people enduring unimaginable suffering.

These are not criminals.

They are fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, daughters, sons, community leaders, and ordinary citizens who chose moral courage over comfort. They sailed unarmed, carrying the spirit of compassion, justice, and human solidarity.

Their mission was rooted in sumūd, steadfastness in the face of injustice.

Yet, instead of being met with humanity, these South African delegates were intercepted and unlawfully detained by Israeli authorities while participating in a peaceful civilian mission. Their detention represents not only an attack on peaceful protest and humanitarian action, but a violation of fundamental principles of international law and human rights.

South Africans know too well the cost of injustice and the power of global solidarity. Our history was shaped by those around the world who refused to stay silent during apartheid. We cannot remain silent now while our own citizens are detained for standing against oppression and advocating for humanitarian access.

We call on the South African Government, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), and all relevant diplomatic bodies to act urgently and decisively to secure the immediate release and safe return of all detained South African delegates.

Diplomatic pressure must be exerted immediately. The protection of South African citizens and the defense of peaceful humanitarian activism cannot be negotiable.

By signing this petition, you are declaring that:

  • Humanitarian solidarity is not a crime.
  • Peaceful protest must be protected.
  • South Africans detained for standing for justice must not be abandoned.
  • The world cannot continue to look away from the suffering in Gaza.

Stand with the detained delegates.
Stand for justice.
Stand for humanity.

Sign now and demand their immediate release.
