I am deeply troubled by the conditions at Animal Protection League Inc. in Indiana. This shelter, which received a staggering $1,041,511 through a contract with the City of Anderson over four years, has raised serious concerns about its use of funds and treatment of animals.

Unfortunately, its adoption standards are excessively high and not reflective of those at local city shelters, such as Indianapolis Animal Care Services. Many families are eager to adopt and provide these animals with loving homes but are unable to do so due to these stringent requirements. Public feedback frequently indicates that people have submitted applications yet never received a response.

The conditions for the dogs in the shelter are equally alarming. They are confined to their kennels for hours, receiving only one 10–15 minute walk per day and are only let out while their kennels are being cleaned. They are fed just once a day. Even more distressing is the apparent disregard for their medical needs—many dogs do not receive necessary vaccinations or medical treatment. Shockingly, some have even been allowed to leave the facility without receiving the legally required rabies vaccine.

With such dire conditions and potential misuse of public funds, this shelter must be held accountable. The public has a right to know where their tax dollars are being spent. To address these issues, please contact the City of Anderson's Mayor at (765) 648-6000 and demand an audit of the shelter. If additional funding is needed for proper operation, insist that more resources be allocated to these neglected animals.
