Sakura-Con has officially announced its new Accessibility webpage on social media with the following message:
"Sakura-Con is dedicated to creating a welcoming, accessible community. As we work to improve, we'd like to announce our Accessibility policies are now listed on our website."
Below, we've included relevant excerpts from the webpage for each demand in the petition (Accessed 2025-04-16 13:00:00). Note that these are simply relevant excerpts and not a direct reply from the Sakura-Con Board and should not be interpreted that way.
- Publish a page for Accessibility on the website for Sakura-Con.

- Redesign signage for high contrast so that they are more visible for people with blindness, visual impairments, and even those without disabilities. Currently for the 2025 event, our team has identified that the maps in the app and browser have accessibility bugs that require intervention.
- "We have a black and white, high contrast, printer-friendly version of our schedule posted here: https://sakuracon.org/programming/schedule/"
-
"We use accessible color schemes within our website, branding, and mobile app where we can, to be compliant with WCAG 2.0+ standards. However, our website is due for a full overhaul in the next year or two, and we are aware there are outstanding issues with it. We are including those standards, as well as Accessibility Conformance Testing, as a critical component of that rebuild effort. We don’t have an exact timeline for this rebuild at this time, but this is an active project within our Board currently."
-
"Our new branding, rolled out in 2024, meets WCAG contrast requirements at this time. However, we understand that the branding is only a part of our overall online presence, and continue to look for ways we can ensure our online spaces are welcoming for all, starting with the website rebuild."
- Change the design of the membership badge so that disabilities are not stigmatized, and relocate any indicator to the reverse side of the badge for privacy.
- If requested, we can place a sticker with a wheelchair symbol on the front of the badge to denote that the member needs ADA accommodations.

- Remove the full legal name from the membership badge for privacy.
- "Preferred Names: We respect that not everyone would like to have their legal name on their badge, or may use a preferred name for a number of reasons. We’ve had this process in place for over a decade and are continuing to work on changes to make this easier year over year for our members. If you would like a preferred name on your badge, please follow the “Alternate Display Name” section here: https://sakuracon.org/registration/faq/"
Summary of updates
- As of this moment, our first demand for the Accessibility webpage is met.
- We have 3 bug reports that remain unresolved. One of the bugs regards low readability of map labels due to small, narrow font and low-contrast. The other two bugs regard missing hours of operation for the show rooms and a typo in its name which makes it difficult to locate critical information for navigating the convention. We discovered this when interviewing community members asking for better signage.
- The Sakura-Con Board of Directors mentioned at the April 13 general meeting that they are looking into options for the badge design.
For transparency, our team of advocates have not actually received an email reply from the Sakura-Con Board or Chair to our email presenting this petition or our bug reports. We will update this space as we receive more information.
