I will never forget the terrifying moment when I witnessed a car recklessly zoom past a stopped school bus. 

Children were disembarking, vulnerable and exposed in what should have been a secure moment of their day.

 This reckless disregard for safety shouldn't have a place in our community.

It's heartbreaking to think that each day, our children face such unnecessary risks simply by getting on and off the school bus.

Yuma has far too many close calls, and it's only a matter of time before a preventable tragedy occurs. We are asking the Yuma City Council and local school boards to recognize the gravity of this issue and take immediate action.

Our proposal is both practical and sustainable: equip our school buses with 360 degree safety cameras. 

This advanced technology is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. We propose a violator funded model that ensures the installation and maintenance of these cameras come at no additional cost to taxpayers. By holding reckless drivers accountable with fines for illegal passes, we can effectively self finance this crucial safety upgrade.

Statistics show that nationwide, thousands of illegal passes occur every day, posing a critical threat to student safety. In places that have implemented bus mounted cameras, significant reductions in these violations have been documented, translating to fewer near misses and ultimately, safer streets for our children.

Building a safer Yuma for our young ones should be a top priority for all of us. We urge the Yuma City Council, local school boards, and law enforcement partners to act now before it's too late.
