Demand Safer Roads and Stronger Accountability for Commercial Vehicle Safety
The Issue
Every family expects their loved ones to return home safely. Our family never got that chance.
On May 12, 2026, our beloved dad's life was tragically taken from him in a fatal commercial vehicle collision while moving across the country from Vernon, British Columbia, to Oromocto, New Brunswick. His life was taken southeast of Sault Ste. Marie, in Desbarats, Ontario, cutting his cross country trip way too short.
No family should ever receive the devastating phone call that their loved one is never coming home. No family should have to learn about a loved one's death by seeing photographs of their vehicle in the media.
That morning was supposed to mark the continued chapter of his cross country journey. A beautiful day, full of hope, reunion, and opportunity. On his way to visit his sister that evening, reconnect with lifelong friends the following days and begin the countryside life he had always dreamed of going back to in New Brunswick.
Instead, his time stopped at approximately 8am. His innocent life taken, and forever effecting our innocent family, his loved ones, best friends, first responders, local community members, and witnesses.
Our dad was more than the driver behind the wheel. He was a father, a brother, a cousin, an uncle who felt like a second father, a best friend, and someone who never met a stranger. His kindness, generousity, and love touched people from coast to coast. His absence is felt every single day by everyone fortunate enough to know him.
This petition is about our dad—but it is also about every person who travels Canada's roads and every family who deserves the certainty that their loved one will arrive home safely.
Too many Canadians are killed or seriously injured in collisions involving commercial vehicles. These tragedies are not statistics—they represent lives, families, dreams, and futures that can never be replaced.
Since dad's fatal collision, the urgency for change has become even more apparent.
On June 19, 2026, an Ontario Provincial Police commercial vehicle inspection found that 40% of the trucks inspected were removed from the road because of mechanical defects or licensing violations.
In early July, the OPP also reported that speed-related fatalities in Ontario had increased by more than 80% compared to 2025.
On July 22, 2026, Saskatchewan RCMP reported a 77% increase in fatal collisions and a 108% increase in fatalities compared with the previous year.
7 fatal collisions just on Highway 17 alone.
These numbers are alarming.
Behind every statistic is someone's parent, child, sibling, spouse, best friend, or neighbour. Behind every fatal collision is a family whose lives are forever changed. Nobody else deserves to understand this pain.
We are calling on the Ontario Ministry of Transportation—and every Ministry of Transportation across Canada—to take immediate action by:
Strengthening commercial driver training, licensing requirements, and ongoing safety education, and take action on all 13 recommendations from the audit from the Ontario Auditor General, Shelley Spence.
Increasing roadside inspections and enforcement to ensure commercial vehicles meet safety standards before they are allowed on our roads. Ensuring that all inspection stations are open.
Investing in safer road infrastructure, and reviewing the routes of commercial transportation.
Providing assistance to victims' families.
Commercial transportation is essential to Canada, but safety must always come first. Everyone deserves to get home safely, and come home to their loved ones.
No family should have to experience the unexplainable pain, tragedy, and grief that ours now carries every day.
No child should lose a parent because of a preventable collision.
No parent should lose a child because of a preventable collision.
No dream should end on a highway.
Our dad's life was priceless. He had plans, hopes, and years still ahead of him. His life was taken from him, along with his furry companion, and all of his belongings he was moving with. Taken away in a single, preventable moment that is forever life altering.
While we cannot bring him back, we can fight to prevent another family from enduring this unimaginable loss.
