Demand Safe Crosswalk Installation across McClintock south of Warner Road

The Issue

On Friday, March 29th, my daughter was struck by a car while riding her bike home from school. This incident occurred on McClintock just north of La Vieve Road, at the shopping center exit in Tempe, Arizona. The lack of a protected crosswalk in this area has made it hazardous for pedestrians and cyclists alike, particularly students of Corona del Sol High School.

Every day, countless students like my daughter risk their lives crossing this busy road to get to and from school. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), most pedestrian fatalities occur in urban areas like ours (73%), at non-intersection locations (70%). We cannot sit idle while our children are exposed to such danger.

We implore the City of Tempe to install a protected crosswalk across McClintock south of Warner Road. This simple act could significantly enhance safety for our community's youth who walk or ride bikes daily. The Warner Road and McClintock intersection is extremely busy and has already seen numerous incidents of unsafe conditions for bike riders. Additionally, students in our neighborhood of Alta Mira do not have a school bus to school and are required to bike or walk the almost 2 miles and cross at the unsafe intersection.

The time for action is now. Our children's safety should never be compromised due to inadequate infrastructure. Let us ensure that no other child or parent experiences what my family has gone through.

Please sign this petition urging the City of Tempe to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist safety by installing a protected crosswalk across McClintock immediately.
