The Issue

I am writing this with a deep sense of urgency and personal distress. I own antique cars which I cherish and proudly display at various car shows in Bristol. However, recently, I have been hesitant to drive over the Mount Hope Bridge with them. The last time I took my custom 1930 Ford Model A across it, I faced a harrowing experience where the bolts that hold the windshield rattled off due to the poor road surface! Additionally, the drop at the expansion plates is not only an inconvenience but poses a mechanical danger to all vehicles that dare to traverse the bridge.

This bridge, a vital connector between Portsmouth and Bristol, RI, underwent a resurfacing project meant to ensure its safety and longevity for at least five years. The reality is far from that promise. The fresh resurfacing is already crumbling, jeopardizing every individual's safety who crosses it. This situation is unacceptable, and immediate corrective measures must be taken by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT).

The community heavily relies on the Mount Hope Bridge as a critical part of daily commutes, emergency routes, and tourism infrastructure. It's not merely a strip of road; it's a lifeline for many. Unfixed, this surfacing issue poses increased risks of accidents, damage to vehicles, and potential loss of life. We cannot sit idle while our safety hangs in the balance due to subpar construction work!

We demand that RIDOT take immediate action to reassess the resurfacing quality and make necessary repairs. RIDOT must ensure that future projects adhere to higher standards with rigorous inspections during and post-construction phases. It is only reasonable to hold those accountable when public safety is compromised due to oversight.

Sign this petition to urge RIDOT to prioritize the safety and quality of the Mount Hope Bridge resurfacing. Together, our collective voice can press for the urgent changes needed for a safer journey for everyone. Let us ensure that every vehicle, antique or otherwise, can safely cross this historic bridge without fear. Sign the petition and be a part of the change for a safer tomorrow.
