Demand Return of School Police—Stop Violence and Drug Dealing in LAUSD!

The Issue

We, the undersigned parents with children enrolled in the Los Angeles Unified School District, demand this petition and demand action from the LAUSD Board of Education. (ENLACE A PETICIÓN EN ESPAÑOL)

After investigating, compiling, analyzing, and reaching agreements on the nefarious agenda of unscrupulous leaders—which under the protection of organizations with personal interests and unions that all work together to destabilize conditions against children, leave schools, students, and teachers in schools, especially in middle and high schools, without physical protection—we parents, teachers, students and LAUSD employees are left vulnerable in this situation.

The Board of Education is undertaking resolutions to dismantle and remove the school police entirely from LAUSD. In 2020, the Board of Education voted to remove school police officers from campuses, cutting the department budget and 35% of the school police force.

We therefore request your support:

  • We express our concern about a process which violates the human and civil rights of many students and parents,
  • We demand that the Board of Education, Unions and Organizations listen to our voice and respect our opinions,
  • We request the support of parents, teachers, LAUSD staff and the community, and
  • We demand a focus on the physical safety of our students, teachers and LAUSD staff.

We are hoping for and asking for your support so that we can all work together to make a change.

This letter will be presented to the Board of Education. We require your presence before the Board, your opinion and signature on this petition, to make our voice heard and to make them understand that parents "DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ELIMINATION OF THE LAUSD SCHOOL POLICE".

The following is information gathered on the serious problems that our students face due to lack of security:

  1. LAUSD hides information about the serious security problems and only acts when there is death or overdose, without having a prevention or deterrence plan.
  2. Reported VIOLENCE incidents increased from 3,954 during the 2021-22 school year to 5,680 the following 2022-23 school year, an increase of 44% over just one year.
  3. Reported DRUG consumption incidents increased from 1,349 during the 2021-22 school year to 2,189 the following 2022-23 school year, an increase of 62% over just one year.
  4. There are no physical student searches for drugs or weapons, endangering the student and peers.
  5. Twenty-five million dollars were cut from school police and redirected to the Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP) program, to pay for politically motivated organizations that have done nothing to improve school safety.
  6. Youth gangs stalk students around schools to recruit them and induce them to use drugs.

Therefore, we request the Board not eliminate the LAUSD school police and discontinue using funds allocated for the protection of children to pay political interest groups or self-interests.

We the undersigned, hold you, the individual members of the Board of Education, personally responsible for the safety, health, and well-being of our children and students, and personally liable for any injury to our children caused by your negligence and willful endangerment.
