We say “NO”! ENFORCE THE CURRENT CODE!

As I see my own students stifled by the imposing dress code implemented by the Bay District Schools for the 25-26 school year, my commitment to their freedom of expression solidifies even more. This dress code comes to us in the guise of a solution to problems that urgently need addressingproblems that remain unattended while the district drowns our children’s voices in another needless stricture. Our district continues to struggle to serve the comprehensive needs of all students. Instead of focusing on these systemic issues and bringing the administration to account for their failure to enforce previous regulations, we find ourselves fighting against a stricter dress code.

Our students need the freedom to choose their attire, keeping within appropriate bounds. Dress codes have been shown to have a limited impact on student behavior or academic performance. Moreover, restrictive dress codes can often exacerbate discrepancies in applying disciplinary measures to students of different races or genders, leading to a school environment that is inequitable and unjust.

The intent of this petition is to directly address Bay District School Board members and articulate our collective refusal to adhere to the new dress code. Instead of enforcing stricter regulations, we urge the Board to address the pressing needs of our education system, starting with the overhaul needed within the district itself. We, the parents, prefer dialogue and necessary reform rather than the bullying of our children into a restrictive dress code. Stand with us for our children's freedom of expression—sign this petition.
