Every year in our city, the situation concerning fireworks seems to spiral further out of control. What is meant to be a spectacle of joy and celebration, often descends into chaos, causing riots and necessitating heavier policing. This year reached a new low, with the culprits audaciously targeting young children. Not only does this terrorise human lives, but also our pets. Each year, my poor dog has to be medicated against the horrifying anxiety fireworks inflict upon her.

The time has come for this to stop. The sale of fireworks, especially by small retailers, must be regulated and if possible, they should be made noiseless. The effects of these rampant fireworks go beyond just being an annoyance - they are contributing to antisocial behaviour and distressing both people and animals alike.

Furthermore, reports from animal care organizations worldwide show that the loud noises caused by fireworks lead to a drastic increase in pets running away from home, many of them never to be found again. This is unacceptable.

Fireworks displays should no longer come at the expense of our community's well-being. It is unjust to prioritize profit over our collective duty of care. The actions of a few shouldn't ruin the peace for the many. We call for stronger restrictions on the absolute end to the unregulated sale of fireworks. People shouldn't live in fear and animals should not be subjected to terror.
