Demand Restoration of Backcountry Trails in Canada’s National Parks
The Issue
As a proud Canadian, I am deeply concerned about the current state of Canada's national parks. Our cherished Rocky Mountain National Parks, Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Yoho are suffering from serious neglect. A large portion of the backcountry trails and bridges are in terrible condition, due to decrease in funding and the priorities of Parks Canada.
Not only are many trails and backcountry campsites poorly maintained, dozens of bridges are out and hundreds of kilometres of trail have been decommissioned or are no longer maintained by Parks Canada, with little or no consultation with Canadians.
Some of these trails have existed for hundreds of years and were used by generations of Indigenous peoples and fur traders - we are not just losing recreational access to some of the most beautiful places on Earth, we are losing part of our history.
Section 4(1) of the Canada National Parks Act provides that our national parks are "dedicated to the people of Canada for their benefit, education and enjoyment and shall be maintained and made use of so as to leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations".
It is a national disgrace that our best known and loved parks are not being maintained for future generations.
This petition demands that the federal government prioritize the restoration of all backcountry trails and bridges to good condition in our national parks.
Please sign this petition and stand with us in this fight.
If we don’t act soon, we will lose these trails forever.
The clock is ticking.
