Demand Resignation or Dismissal of Officer Brett Taylor from Rock Island Police Department

Demand Resignation or Dismissal of Officer Brett Taylor from Rock Island Police Department

The Issue

Jakarta Jackson, a 21-year-old unarmed citizen, was tragically killed in front of his family by Officer Brett Taylor, causing an immense wave of fear and unrest within the community. Hardly can we bear the thought that our children, friends, or family members could be next, that we could be the next victims living in the very community we pay taxes to protect and serve. It has come to light that Jackson lifted his hands and questioned the reason for his harassment prior to his untimely death. The grief-stricken screams of his 3-year-old daughter, 6-year-old nephew, and his brother who witnessed the tragedy, echo within all of us demanding justice.

Police brutality continues to shatter communities and families throughout the United States. Statistics unveil the brutal truth, as The Washington Post’s database of fatal police shootings reports that 991 people have been shot and killed by police in 2020 alone. Citizens of Rock Island, we have a responsibility and a right to feel safe in our homes and streets. We insist on Officer Brett Taylor's resignation or dismissal as we strive to rebuild trust in our community and local law enforcement. We seek your support in sending a clear and strong message to our elected officials and police department: no more unaccountable deaths in our watches. Please sign this petition to demand justice for Jakarta Jackson and more importantly, to protect the lives of those we hold dear.
