Demand Resignation of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and deputy director of UNWomen
The Issue
I am a concerned global citizen, deeply disturbed by the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7th and the weeks following. The videos shared by Hamas, celebrating their actions against women, children, elderly and men have left an indelible mark on me. Yet what has been even more disheartening is the inaction from those in power at the United Nations.
The Chief of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Turk, has failed to condemn these heinous acts. His continued anti-Israeli stance and antisemitic agenda have only served to exacerbate tensions rather than promote peace or justice. Even seven weeks after the atrocities of October 7th, Mr Turk failed to recognize the rights of Israeli Humans violated on that day, and in the weeks that followed.
Similarly, the Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, Ms. Sarah Hendriks, has shown a lack of recognition towards these atrocities committed against women and girls. It took her eight weeks, and intense international pressure, to get UN Women to issue a condemnation of Hamas. This was after she was asked directly about it by CNN's Bianna Golodryga where Ms Hendriks provided a prepared answer that expressed disbelief in Israel women's suffering at the hands of Hamas.
These individuals hold positions that demand responsibility, accountability, and most importantly - action. Their failure to act or even acknowledge these horrific events undermines their credibility and suitability for their roles.
We call upon all those who value human rights to join us in demanding their immediate resignation. Their positions should be filled with individuals who will not shy away from condemning such acts unequivocally while promoting peace and justice globally.
This is not just about Israel or Gaza - it's about humanity itself. We cannot stand idle while those in power turn a blind eye towards such blatant disregard for human life.
If Mr Turk and Ms Hendriks do not resign, we will be demanding that our countries pull back voluntary funding from the UN ( #DefundTheUN ), including the funding for UN Women (for example, the US provides $21M/yr to UN Women) and UN Human Rights ($30m/yr from the US). This is not because we don't believe in these causes, but rather we don't believe in the people heading the organizations focused on these causes.
Please sign this petition if you believe in justice, accountability, human rights; if you believe that no one should be allowed to celebrate violence without facing condemnation; if you believe that every voice matters - especially those silenced by fear or oppression. If you believe that Israeli voices and their human rights matter just as much as any other human on the face of the planet.
