For the safety of my 9-year-old daughter, and all children in Dubuque, we must address a deep-seated issue. It's shocking how Dubuque sheriff Joseph Kennedy allowed Matt Pothoff, who had been charged as a child predator, to serve as a deputy in the very community he endangered. Although Pothoff has resigned, the danger doesn't end here. The problem traces back to the poor performance and irresponsible hiring decisions made by Sheriff Joseph Kennedy.

In the United States, over 60,000 children become victims of sexual abuse each year. The fear and pain inflicted upon them often last a lifetime. The effort to protect our community from sexual predators should be a top priority, especially for those who are tasked to enforce law and order. Unfortunately, our sheriff seems to fail in this fundamental responsibility.

Dubuque County Sheriff's Office, under the leadership of Sheriff Kennedy, has sparked significant concerns within the community about its performance. Transparency, accountability, and public safety are pillars of any effective justice system. When those in charge fail to uphold these standards, it is our duty to demand change.

Dubuque doesn't deserve a sheriff who hires people charged with serious crimes to positions of power, who might cause harm again. We need someone who prioritizes the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable among us – our children.
