Demand Resignation of Senate President of Nigeria for Persistent Sexual Abuse Allegations

The Issue

Nigeria, my cherished homeland, merits a leadership that embodies dignity and respect for all, particularly women. We are seriously disturbed by the recurring sexual abuse allegations against the Senate President of Nigeria. It is not just about one person, but about the integrity of the office and the image of our beloved nation.

Such allegations, if true, are not just a violation of the victims' rights, but a blatant disregard for the laws we hold in high esteem. Regrettably, the frequency of these allegations against the Senate President casts a long, unsettling shadow over his capacity to serve as a dignified figurehead and leader for our people.

It should be noted that in Nigeria, an estimated 800,000 women and girls are subjected to sexual violence annually, according to a 2020 report by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA). As an aspect of the larger campaign to end sexual violence and injustice in Nigeria, the leader of the Senate, against whom these allegations are regularly made, needs to take moral responsibility.

We, Nigerians, value the principle that everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, the magnitude and repetition of these allegations are cause for concern, creating an atmosphere of distrust and tarnishing the image of the Senate.

We, thus, call upon the Senate President of Nigeria to resign immediately while these investigations are ongoing, in order to uphold the sanctity and honour of the Senate. His resignation would send a clear message that sexual abuse is a grave offense that Nigeria will not tolerate, especially from its leaders. Stand with us, sign this petition. Let's demand for a leadership that reflects our values and respects our laws.
