The Issue

I am an animal rescuer, lover, and activist devastated by a regrettable instance of animal neglect in our community. The City of Memphis and Mayor Paul Young must mandate the resignation of Memphis Animal Services Director, Ty Coleman, the employee who locked her in the crate and ban any volunteer that watched her suffer the long painful death.

Under his leadership, Lulu MAS-A-37734 was ordered to be put outside while the city was under a heat advisory. Lulu was confined outdoors in a plastic crate during extreme temperatures over 100 degrees, which resulted in her tragically dying from heatstroke.

Lulu's death is not just an isolated event but indicative of a broader, systemic issue within MAS. There has been an alarming rise in euthanasia's and animals adopted out unaltered. Making everything we do counterproductive.

Such irresponsible handling of our defenseless animals under the care of public services cannot be tolerated. I urge the citizens of Memphis and animal lovers worldwide to take a stand, as we cannot allow another innocent life like Lulu's to be lost due to negligent practices.

The resignation of Ty Coleman is only the first step towards improved safety protocols and overall better treatment for animals within public services. We must send a clear message to our public officials that such actions are unacceptable and demand change.

Please sign this petition to help us push for justice. Let a safer and more compassionate future for our animals be Lulu’s legacy.

I will then start working on Lulu's law to hold animal shelter employees accountable for preventable deaths due to negligence. The law will also ban outside time during heat advisories.
