As an ardent animal lover and advocate for the fair treatment of all beings, I was appalled to witness the horrific actions of James Hampton. Recently sworn into the Union County Sheriff's Office in Monroe, NC, Hampton was captured on video brutally assaulting a K9 officer, Zuul, while serving as an officer in Salisbury.

This shocking behavior brings to light his lack of self-discipline and disregard for his colleagues, both human and canine. Such disturbing actions demonstrate that James Hampton is not suited for a role that demands integrity, respect, and professional conduct.

Despite being referred for termination due to his appalling actions, Hampton evaded accountability by resigning, thereby sidestepping disciplinary action and allowing himself to simply transition to a new district. This maneuver undermines the trust in the systems meant to protect our communities and ensure justice and safety for all.

Law enforcement officers are entrusted with the authority to uphold the law and protect society. A person with a record of violence against an officer, human or otherwise, poses a danger to the community and the integrity of the position.

This petition seeks the immediate resignation of James Hampton from his current position in the Union County Sheriff's Office. Union County deserves officers of the highest moral character, who uphold the rights and safety of all members of society, human and animal alike.

This petition also seeks for Salisbury Police Department, to officially hold James Hampton responsible for his cruel assault on a k9 officer, and bring official charges against him. No one is above the law. If this crime was committed by a citizen of the public, there would be no  hesitation to bring forward charges. That has been proven time and time again. 

We also would like for his “resignation” to be altered to “resigned in lieu of termination” by the Salisbury Police Department.
