The Issue

I have read about and seen video of the abuse that animals endure at slaughter when they are not given a non-recoverable stun. The distress and agony that these animals endure is not only needless but also inhumane, challenging my very core beliefs about compassion and empathy. This is why I feel compelled to raise my voice against the religious exemption that allows this practice to continue in the UK.

The UK prides itself on being a nation of animal lovers, valuing welfare and ethical treatment above antiquated practices. Yet, each year thousands of animals suffer unnecessarily due to the religious exemption for non-recoverable stunning at slaughterhouses. While respecting cultural and religious practices is important, animal welfare must take precedence. In an age where technology and science offer us humane alternatives, it is indefensible to let medieval practices endure when they cause such suffering.

Non-recoverable stunning before slaughter is a measure designed to minimize the suffering of animals. According to the Farm Animal Welfare Committee (FAWC), animals should be stunned effectively prior to slaughter to ensure they do not experience pain. With advancing humane technologies, we can ensure that these animals meet their end with dignity and without undue distress.

Countries such as Norway and Switzerland have already enacted legislation to ban slaughter methods that do not involve stunning animals beforehand, demonstrating that it is both possible and practical to place animal welfare at the forefront without disregarding religious considerations. By removing these exemptions, the UK government has a chance to reaffirm its commitment to the humane treatment of animals while setting an example for the rest of the world.

We urge the UK government to take immediate action to abolish the religious exemptions that permit non-recoverable stunning of animals. This change is not only a step forward for animal welfare but also a reflection of the values our society holds dear: compassion, empathy, and the humane treatment of all beings.

Please sign this petition to call on the UK government to make this necessary change for the animals who cannot speak for themselves. Let us not allow history to dictate the suffering of the present. Your support can make a difference for countless animals in the UK.
