The Issue

On October 9, 2025, the Herald Mail published an article about an upcoming "Open House" by a local Islamic Center. This event was meant to foster community understanding and dialogue, offering insight into Islamic culture and traditions. However, the initiative faced unexpected backlash when Michael Guessford, a member of the Washington County Public Schools Board of Education, commented on the related Facebook post with the phrase, "We need to protest."

As a leader and influencer within our education system, Mr. Guessford's stance is deeply concerning and casts a shadow over the principles of inclusion and respect that we strive to instill in our schools. It is unacceptable for someone in a position of educational authority to incite discord and promote a narrative of division, particularly through expressions that may lead to hate or xenophobia.

Educational leaders should embody exemplary values that promote harmony, understanding, and respect for all communities. Mr. Guessford's actions contradict these values and undermine the trust placed in the Board of Education to guide our children towards becoming empathetic and informed citizens.

His comments do not reflect the ethos of our diverse community in Maryland, nor do they serve the interests of the educational environment we are committed to maintaining. It is imperative that members of the Board of Education uphold standards of conduct that model equity, inclusion, and acceptance.

This petition calls for the immediate resignation or removal of Michael Guessford from his role within the Board of Education. We must ensure that our educational leaders are champions of unity, community, and constructive dialogue.

Join us in demanding accountability and support the call for change to secure an inclusive and respectful future for our students and community. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and advocate for a leadership that reflects our community's values.
