As an individual deeply involved in animal rescue, I have encountered heart-wrenching situations at Lee County Domestic Animal Services in Florida. Despite repeated efforts and frequent pleas, they consistently refuse to release animals for rescue with an astounding rate of 90%, even for non-critical issues such as an ear infection or failing to meet breed tail length standards. This department's current practice also involves euthanizing dogs that have given birth, and in some instances, carrying out abortions, and then proceeding to end the mother's life as well. These practices result in the senseless killing of dozens of animals each day. This must change.

Although animal shelters' services are crucial, especially in controlling animal populations and promoting public safety, their methods must adhere to humane procedures and principles. All life is valuable, and the welfare and rights of these animals must be respected. An animal's life should not be disposable just because it doesn't meet a certain criterion.

We need systemic reviews to challenge these inhumane practices. We demand immediate reforms in the policies governing Lee County Domestic Animal Services, the transparency of their operations, and increased support for animal rescue efforts.
