Demand Reform in Domestic Violence and Child Safety Handling Procedures

Demand Reform in Domestic Violence and Child Safety Handling Procedures
The issue
I am addressing this issue from an intensely personal viewpoint. I find myself caught in a relentless struggle with the system, constantly being depicted as the offender, rather than the bona fide casualty that I am, in a case of domestic violence and coercive control. This gruelling fight continues as I strive for the safety of my own children. The prevalent practices of child safety organizations, which oftentimes hastily remove children from homes and fail to constructively engage with families for potential resolution and homecoming, are causing more harm than good. This process exacerbates the trauma faced by children and can lead to higher suicide rates as a consequence of unaddressed domestic abuse situations. According to the American Journal of Public Health, adults exposed to domestic violence in childhood have higher rates of suicide attempts (AJPH, 2018).
We demand a thorough reform of these practices and for a more humane, family-centred approach to be adopted. Domestic violence, coercive control, and child safety should never be taken lightly, with efforts and resources channelled towards aid, protection, and recovery for victims. We call upon legislators, decision-makers, social workers and all involved parties to recognize these issues and take immediate, decisive action. Please sign this petition and join us to drive this desperately needed change in how domestic violence and child safety are handled.
