Demand Reform for Dallas Animal Services

The Issue

We, the concerned animal welfare community of Dallas, TX has no confidence in the ability of DAS Shelter Director MeLissa Webber, Assistant Director Whitney Bollinger, Ann Barnes, Director of Field Services, Sarah Sheek, Manager, along with other administrative staff to run Dallas Animal Services effectively and to provide proper medical and behavioral care for the animals in their charge.

We will share details below and add information daily on specifics of shelter failings. We encourage you to review the information and ask questions. And, most importantly, to sign this petition to demand change on behalf of our shelter animals - past, present, and future - and our communities that depend on and deserve a shelter system worth of Big D.

Tragedy Occurs Daily: (details will be added asap..initial stories)

On October 17th, Chimani the Rottweiler is found dead in his kennel with no nothing medically wrong per the shelter vet. What happened to a dog that just came off stray hold and was tagged by a rescue to lose their life with no warning. The shelter in addition refuses to release the body for autopsy.  How does a dog go from okay to deceased in their kennel and there is no accountability?

Daily...dogs are fed the same amount of food no matter if they weigh 100 pounds or 10 pounds.  They are fed a tiny paper nacho bowl of food. How is this acceptable? Noted once again today, October 18th, that in the yellow pod 12 dogs were missed in feeding yet no one did anything except a volunteer who tried to get them fed.  This is daily that dogs are skipped.  Daily. Unacceptable.

June 18th...In 24 Hours Alvin and Daria died in the custody of Dallas Animal Services due to lack of care. They both received the new cutting edge treatment single injection heartworm treatment to save money for Dallas Animal Services.  The protocols clearly state that dogs MUST remain still and calm for 6 weeks after their treatment while their heartworms are dying and coming out of their heart and moving into their lungs where they decompose and the body re-absorbs them. If their heart rate gets elevated even a little, the large amount of dead worms causes a pulmonary embolism.  This is what killed both Alvin and Daria.  Daria participated in a  morning run in heat over 90 degrees and was put into playgroup by staff less than two weeks after the injection. It was reported she just collapsed out in the play yard with staff and was barely breathing by the time she got down to medical.  Alvin was put into playgroup and the exact same thing happened.  So a healthy 4 year old happy dog who played well with others dies because staff want him in playgroup and the management can't be bothered to ensure they got proper care?. His necropsy showed a thromboembolism in his left lung. He was killed by improper basic care at Dallas Animal  Services. He came into care at Dallas Animal services after his owners became homeless..A mom and her son who adopted him a year earlier.  Daria was only 2 years old and a happy fun girl.  Yet it took social media to get the shelter to change protocol. They completely ignored 2 dogs dying in 24 hours.
