Demand recognition and protection for trans women
The Issue
I am a trans woman living in the United States, and every day, I confront the societal challenges and systemic discrimination faced by individuals like me. The lack of full recognition of trans women as women by both the United States government and the United Nations denies us the equality and respect that we rightfully deserve. Trans rights are human rights, and it is imperative that these rights are universally recognized and protected.
Transgender individuals, and especially trans women, have historically faced significant barriers to accessing basic human rights. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, discrimination in employment, healthcare, and housing remains rampant, with nearly 30% of transgender individuals encountering these issues just for expressing their gender identity. This is not just a matter of legality, but of human dignity and safety.
Moreover, violence against trans women, particularly women of color, is a persistent and terrifying reality. The Human Rights Campaign reported that 2020 was the most violent year recorded for transgender and gender non-conforming people, especially trans women of color, who are disproportionately affected. This epidemic of violence is fueled by a lack of official recognition and protection, leaving countless lives at risk.
A Declaration of Trans Rights by both the United States and the United Nations would be a groundbreaking step towards systemic change. It would affirm that trans women are unequivocally women and entitled to all the rights and protections that come with that recognition. This declaration could serve as a powerful tool to combat discrimination, promote equality, and importantly, provide a legal framework for the protection of trans individuals worldwide.
By acknowledging the rights and humanity of trans women, the United States and the United Nations can set a precedent for countries around the world. This can drive legal reforms needed to ensure that policies are inclusive and protective of the transgender community, fostering an environment where everyone can live authentically without fear of prejudice or violence.
Join me in urging the United States of America and the United Nations to take immediate action. Let us call upon them to recognize trans women as women in every policy, every law, and in every arena of governance, and to enact a comprehensive Declaration of Trans Rights. Your signature can make a difference in pushing for a world where true equality and justice are not merely ideals, but realities.
