The Issue

An Indiana mother brought a loaded gun to her child’s school and made a direct, violent threat against a lesbian teacher. She called the teacher slurs, accused her of being a predator, and told her to “kiss your kids goodbye.”

All because of a simple classroom assignment about flags — one that included a rainbow flag with the words “be kind.”

This wasn’t a misunderstanding. This wasn’t just an angry parent. This was a hate-fueled, targeted threat meant to intimidate and terrorize someone for their identity, and it happened in a school, in front of children.

Carrie Rivers carried a weapon into Valley Mills Elementary School, made violent threats laced with anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, and sent disturbing messages even after being escorted off campus. She called the teacher a “child predator,” invoked religious condemnation, and made statements that left a teacher fearing for her life and the safety of her family.

This was not just harassment — it was an act of hate, and it must be prosecuted as such.

We demand that local prosecutors treat this as the hate crime it is. This cannot be brushed aside. This cannot be given a slap on the wrist. If this kind of threat is not taken seriously, what kind of message are we sending to LGBTQ+ educators, students, and families?

Real accountability. Real consequences. Hate has no place in our schools.

Sign to demand justice and urge the charges to reflect the true nature of this crime.
