Demand Randy Bauer's Resignation from the United States Chess Federation

The Issue

As an avid chess player and a passionate advocate for gender equality, I am deeply concerned about the treatment of women in the chess community. The discouraging experiences faced by young girls and women in this male-dominated field have compelled me to take action. It is with great urgency that I call for the immediate resignation of Randy Bauer from his position within the United States Chess Federation (USCF).

Randy Bauer's tenure as a member of USCF has been marked by numerous controversies that have perpetuated an environment hostile to women in chess. His actions, or lack thereof, have failed to address these issues effectively or promote inclusivity within our beloved game.

One such controversy occurred during an exchange between Randy Bauer, Jennifer Shahade and another US chess member, Sean Finn on a public Facebook thread which was later splashed on X and Reddit (though Bauer later deleted some of his most outrageous messages). A link with the details of the conversation will be shared at the end of this petition. During the exchange, Randy Bauer accuses Jennifer Shahade of not filing a formal complaint regarding the Alejandro Ramirez allegations, that she was asked to, and that she didn’t want to. Later, he goes on to say the following, “At some point, if you were so certain about his conduct, and if you were one of those he had abused, isn’t it on you to step up.” According to Shahade, she did file a complaint, and another alleged victim, also filed a sexual misconduct claim against Ramirez. In the same thread, Bauer and Sean Finn are also having a discussion, and that ultimately culminates into Bauer threating to dox a victim on social media. Furthermore, Shahade continues on to say that she was badgered and belittled soon after the whistleblowing tweet in February, 2023. Despite the many allegations US Chess was aware of, Alejandro Ramirez was selected to be one of the coaches of the 2022 Women's Chess Olympiad team, an event which over 100 minors. Many US chess officials have stood by that decision, repeatedly touting that it was “timely and appropriate” to send him.”

Furthermore, under his leadership, USCF has consistently failed to allocate adequate resources towards promoting gender diversity initiatives or implementing policies that protect female players from discrimination.

According to reputable sources such as Chess.com and FIDE (World Chess Federation), there is clear evidence highlighting the disparity between male and female representation in competitive chess tournaments worldwide. These statistics demonstrate that women face significant barriers when it comes to accessing opportunities for growth and recognition within this field.

It is crucial that we hold our leaders accountable for their actions—or lack thereof—in addressing these systemic issues plaguing our community. By signing this petition, we demand the immediate resignation of Randy Bauer from his position within USCF. We urge the board members and decision-makers within USCF to take swift action in ensuring that a more inclusive and equitable environment is fostered for all chess players.

Together, let us send a powerful message that discrimination and bias have no place in our beloved game. It is time for change, and it starts with holding those responsible accountable for their actions. Sign this petition today to demand justice, equality, and the resignation of Randy Bauer from USCF.
