Demand Philadelphia to Hold SEPTA Accountable for Drug Abuse on Market-Frankford Line
The Issue
As a daily commuter on the Market-Frankford line in Philadelphia, I am deeply concerned about the rampant drug use that takes place during my daily commute. Twice a day, going to work and coming back home, I witness people openly smoking crack and injecting drugs with no police presence or intervention.
This is not an isolated incident but rather a recurring problem that threatens the safety and well-being of all passengers. Unfortunately, this issue is not only endangering lives but also creating an unsafe environment for commuters who rely on public transportation in Philadelphia.
Despite the truth, that drug use on the Market-Frankford line is out of control and riding the train is an awful experience, recent reports indicate that serious offenses on SEPTA have dropped by more than 40%. (This does not include the 3 homicides reported in the first quarter.) Allowing SEPTA to depict themselves as an organization that has made improvements to safety when things have only gotten worse is a gross liability for the City of Philadelphia and people who use the public transit system.
The City of Philadelphia needs to hold SEPTA accountable for this escalating situation. It is crucial that they enforce stricter regulations, increase SEPTA police presence, implement effective surveillance systems, and provide necessary resources for those struggling with addiction.
I urge you to join me in calling upon our city officials to take immediate action against this alarming issue. Your signature can make a difference in ensuring safe travel conditions for all people using public transportation, in Philadelphia.
