As of today, the Petsmart salon I work in has been without functional AC for over a month. We have been subjected to constant delays from Petsmart corporate in an effort to have it fixed. Only recently have I found out that this is a systemic issue. 

Dozens of people have now told me that their stores & salons waited weeks, months, or even years for AC repairs. In the meantime, both pets and employees were forced to withstand temperatures as high as 95° indoors. 

Work orders were put in. They were ignored.

Calls were made. HR was contacted. 

Nothing has happened. 

We have been given temporary mobile AC units that remain mostly ineffective. Floor fans that do nothing but push hot air around. Swamp coolers that do nothing but add to the humidity. These are not solutions, these are ineffective band-aids. 

I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, both in pets and people. How far does this have to go before Petsmart corporate finally takes their work orders seriously? The death of a pet? The hospitalization of an employee?

Forcing us to repeatedly beg for repairs is both inhumane and cruel. 

Petsmart's own internal policy mentions that salons MUST close in temperatures of over 80°. Yet this policy is very vaguely written, and very rarely followed as salons start to go multiple days without functioning AC, and sales plans begin to take priority over safety. Profits before people, and before pets.

So with this petition, I urge Petsmart to enforce strict guidelines on the maintenance and functionality of air conditioning systems in all locations. Regular inspections should be mandated, and prompt repairs should be required to safeguard the health of all occupants, be they human or animal.

Moreover, Petsmart should be compelled to develop comprehensive emergency plans for extreme heat conditions, ensuring that temporary cooling solutions are available immediately while repairs are underway. Such measures are not only humane but contribute significantly to creating a respectful and considerate work environment.
