Demand Passage of Legislation to Support Family Farms in Washington State
The Issue
Agriculture is a vital part needed in society and U.S agriculture has many problems and is getting worse. The country is relying on fewer and larger farms that are hundreds of miles away leading to shortages through drought and other world events like the recent pandemic.
The number of farms has been decreasing for decades and this is hurting farmers like the one everyone knew growing up, Farmer John.
Farmer John was a regular person who came to the U.S. and lived as
wheat farmer with three kids during the depression until 1947. He
was able to help feed the country and his family because the United States created policies to help farms run by people like Farmer John
From his inspiration, The Farmer John Coalition was created. The Farmer John Coalition is getting great interest from key legislators in WA State House Finance Committee to create a sales and use tax exemption on farm equipment purchases for small and medium sized farms.
This legislation would support 32,000 farms in Washington State.
However, there is opposition from those who do not want smaller sized farms to succeed and prosper like Farmer John once did.
Support for small and medium sized farms is vital for our society. If we do not have a strong food system with farms of different sizes and many locations, we will face even more shortages as time progresses. We cannot advance as a society without a stable food system. We must help farmers like Farmer John. Farmers like Farmer John have been there for us, now it is our turn to support them.
Sign the petition urging Washington State lawmakers to introduce and pass this supportive farm legislation. Yes, your signature matters. Let's help farmers like our beloved friend, Farmer John
