The Issue

The issue is public trust and accountability.

Lee County taxpayers are being asked to trust the school system with millions of dollars, yet many citizens are having difficulty obtaining basic public records needed to understand how those dollars are being managed.

Citizens have reported delays in receiving records, difficulty obtaining contracts and financial information, and substantial or seemingly excessive fees for public documents. These concerns are not limited to one person.

At the same time, the Board of Education has demonstrated increasing internal conflict. During recent public meetings, Board members have openly argued, shown disrespect toward one another, and publicly blamed each other for the Board's failures.

Meanwhile, a funding mechanism that Lee County voters had approved for more than 20 years—ESPLOST—has now been rejected by the voters.

Whether one supported ESPLOST or opposed it, that result sends a clear message: public confidence in the school system has eroded.

The question is no longer simply whether individual decisions were right or wrong.

The question is whether the Lee County School System is being governed transparently, responsibly, and effectively.

That's why state oversight is being requested.

We are asking the State of Georgia to independently examine the district's finances, contracts, public-records practices, and governance and determine whether corrective action or additional oversight is necessary.

The people of Lee County deserve to know that their school system is being properly managed—and they deserve proof, not promises.
