A GW PROFESSOR CALLED GWPD ON A DISABLED BLACK STUDENT

My teammate Liza had to face racial and ableist injustices by Professor Marie Matta. Liza and her service dog, Charlie were publicly shamed as a result of Liza's identity.

As the GW community, we must come together to stand with Liza Malinsky and everybody she is fighting for. Professor Marie Matta must be held accountable.

Liza's Statement:

I am publicly coming forward to let the GW community know what happened to me in class with Professor Marie Matta. I am a disabled Black woman with a history of trauma which is in my file with the university. Due to my trauma, I had to take a leave of absence my freshman year of college. I was able to return with my service dog, Charlie, who comes to class with me for my crippling anxiety. Professor Matta forced Charlie and I to leave class the first week of in person classes. In a move that was both humiliating and illegal according to ADA guidelines, Professor Matta exposed confidential information about my accommodations and disabilities in front of all of my peers, violating my privacy and attempting to shame me. The following week, Charlie and I returned to class under the advice of DSS. This time, Professor Marie Matta called GWPD on me, a disabled Black woman with diagnosed mental illnesses. This video shows the altercations which led to my police escort out of class on January 25th, 2022. In this video, when I asked a GW employee for help in my vulnerable state, I was then laughed at by the professor, the students in the room, and the employee. The employee then left the room, taking no action for my situation. I am not going to let Professor Marie Matta shame me and GW University ignore the gravity of the situation which transpired. Since returning to class, I have yet to receive an apology from Professor Matta. This has not cultivated a safe learning environment. I am a valuable member of the GW community. I am a student-athlete, hold a leadership position in my sorority, and firmly believe that the University needs to serve its community equitably. People like me do not need to be labeled as a “liability” for just existing at the University any longer.
