The Issue

As a passionate 5th grader who has been keeping hermit crabs as beloved pets for many years now, I have learned a lot about these fascinating creatures. Every summer, I visit my grandparents in Ocean City, New Jersey, and it deeply distresses me to see hermit crabs being sold in painted shells at nearly all of the souvenir shops. These painted shells are not only unnatural but harmful and potentially toxic to the crabs.

Hermit crabs are known to absorb chemicals through their exoskeleton; therefore, living in a painted shell could expose them to toxins. Studies suggest that crabs inhabiting painted shells may experience slowed growth, difficulties in the molting process, and even shortened lifespan (Reference: National Geographic). The exploitation of these innocent creatures for profit and entertainment is absolutely unacceptable and needs to end.

It's time that we, as a community, speak up for these creatures who cannot voice their suffering. Please join me in urging the Ocean City Council to ban the sale of hermit crabs in painted shells to safeguard their wellbeing. It's time to show that we care about our wildlife and are ready to make changes for the better. Sign this petition and help create a safer environment for hermit crabs.
