What is the NSA?

Founded in 1952 to decipher coded messages in World War II, the National Security Agency (NSA) now monitors communication data from the internet, text messages, and phone calls globally and domestically. This is a specialty of information gathering called Signals Intelligence (SIGINT).

In 2006, it was revealed that an AT&T building in San Francisco was copying all of its customer’s internet activity that would be constantly fed to the NSA as information. 

Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) allows the NSA to surveil the American (and non-American) people’s data without a warrant.

Additionally, the NSA sends its SIGINT information to the Israeli equivalent of the NSA, Unit 8200, to feed to AI models that are used to kill Palestinians (with 2,000 pound bombs, also U.S.-supplied). 

The NSA also gives its data to the CIA, since they are part of a larger Intelligence Community (IC) of the federal government. The CIA has used this data for drones to track down targets in the Iraq war, killing civilians and children in the process.

Why Should You Care?

The mass seizure of peoples’ online and communication data is the dangerous establishment of a surveillance state.

Anything you look up, any communication you send can be used against you at any point. It is pushing people to be afraid to speak up or criticize immoral behavior from the government.

It is unconstitutional and a breach of the privacy that citizens and non citizens deserve to have when calling, texting, or using the internet.
