Demand Norfolk DA to Refrain from Retrying Karen Read
Demand Norfolk DA to Refrain from Retrying Karen Read
The Issue
Ms. Karen Read was subjected to a trial that was, in our view and in the view of many in our beloved Massachusetts, a travesty of justice. The investigation process was far from the ideals we as citizens hold dear. We believe firmly in the rights of every citizen to transparency and jurisprudence, cornerstones of a democratic society.
The case of Ms. Read is personal to us. As citizens of the commonwealth and as advocates for justice, we stand firmly against any attempt to retry her without proper cause. The district attorney's insistence on retrial is not only unfair to Ms. Read but also falls far short of our community's standards of justice.
We mention the O'Keefe family as they, too, deserve the truth. Every citizen caught in the web of legal proceedings should be treated with due diligence and fairness, a condition that we believe was not met in Ms. Read's case.
In a state where the conviction integrity unit has led to the exoneration of 21 individuals since 1991 (Source: Innocence Project), we must strive to ensure that each prosecution is fair and just. The retrial of Karen Read does not meet this standard.
We, the residents of Norfolk and the broader Massachusetts community, ask the DA not to retry Karen Read. We demand that our justice system live up to its name – to serve justice, not just pay lip service to it. Please consider our plea and join this call for fairness. Sign the petition today.
