The Issue

Brittany's story is a painful one, a loved family member whose life was tragically cut short. A new mom, she leaves behind a 1-year-old baby boy, who must now grow up without his mother's affectionate love and care because of a horrific act of violence inflicted upon her by her abusive partner.

In Canyon TX, where our cousin Brittany hailed from, we are now facing another tragedy. The perpetrator of this heinous crime is asking for a bond reduction. Brittany was a wonderful individual who lived a full, vibrant life before it was so egregiously taken from her. We find it unthinkable that the person responsible for depriving her of her life, as well as causing bitter sorrow to her family, friends, and especially her toddler, should benefit from any leniency.

This case highlights a broader issue. In Texas, over 146 women were killed by their intimate partner in 2019 (source: Texas Council on Family Violence). The gravity of such violence cannot be undermined by reducing bonds for the perpetrators. We call upon the District Attorney to seriously consider the consequences of such a decision and to understand our community's grief and anger.

Our petition seeks justice for Brittany and her family by demanding no reduction be made to the bond of her murderer. It stands in protest against a system that might prioritize the comfort of an offender over the rights of the victim. We, Brittany's relatives and the wider Amarillo community, demand steadfast justice and a fair consideration of the traumatic experience the victim and her family went through. Please, sign this petition to ensure that Brittany's justice is not compromised.
