Demand Netflix Cancel the Animated Reboot of "Good Times"

Demand Netflix Cancel the Animated Reboot of "Good Times"
The Issue
As a deeply concerned fan of the original 1970's classic "Good Times", I am disheartened by the animated reboot produced by Steph Curry, Norman Lear and Seth McFarland on Netflix. This new version takes the most debased stereotypes of Black People and exploits them as the generational evolution of our beloved Evans Family from the original show.
The reboot includes a crack dealing infant, hyper sexualized women, rampant alcohol use, poverty, and ignorance . This is not only a gross misrepresentation but also an oversimplification of Black experiences in its entirety. It is a disservice to our cherished Evans family who struggled against all odds to escape their circumstances.
The original "Good Times" was groundbreaking for its time as it was one of few television shows that depicted African-American families in a realistic light during an era when racial tensions were high (source: Nielsen Ratings). The show had an average viewership rating of 21% during its six-season run (source: TV Guide), making it one among many popular sitcoms during that period.
We must remember that media representation matters significantly. It shapes perceptions about communities and individuals; hence it should be handled with care and respect for diversity (source: American Psychological Association). The current depiction in this reboot does nothing but perpetuate harmful stereotypes which can have damaging effects on societal perceptions and attitudes towards African-Americans.
We urge Netflix to reevaluate this animated reboot immediately. We ask them to consider how they are portraying Black experiences through their content critically. Let's honor our beloved Evans family appropriately – they deserve better than this misrepresentation.
