Demand NBC, SNL, and Shane Gillis to apologize for harmful remarks
The Issue
In Season 52, episode 3 of Saturday Night Live (SNL), Shane Gillis made outright derogatory remarks about women, describing them as 'dressing like whores' at the gym during his opening monologue. As a man who advocates for the equality and respect of women in society, I am deeply disturbed by this blatant disrespect and the harmful reflections it imposes on our community. In a world where violence against women tragically continues to rise, fueled by incel ideologies often propagated by the so-called 'manosphere,' flippant and misogynistic jokes such as these contribute to an environment of disrespect and potential harm towards women. We are living in a time when women face undue scrutiny and judgment, often becoming targets of disparagement and violence predominantly propagated by insecure men. As men, it's our responsibility to stand up and hold one another accountable for misogynistic and detrimental behavior disguised as "humor." It's crucial to acknowledge that misguided jokes perpetuating a culture of sexism and dehumanization have no place in our society, and those who utter such narratives should be addressed. Television networks like NBC and influential shows like SNL hold significant sway over cultural discourse. By allowing figures like Shane Gillis to disseminate hurtful ideologies under the guise of comedy, they perpetuate a cycle of hurt and degradation that can no longer continue unchecked. We must demand accountability—not only for insulting and demeaning remarks, but also for enabling and broadcasting them to millions. This petition calls upon NBC, SNL, and Shane Gillis to issue a public apology for the offensive comments made during the broadcast. An apology serves as a crucial step towards acknowledging the harm caused and highlights the importance of moving towards a more respectful and inclusive society. Sign this petition to stand against misogyny, demand accountability from those in powerful media positions, and support creating a safer world for women where harmful stereotypes are dismantled rather than casually perpetuated. NBC and SNL should show solidarity with women and make a sizable donation to a women's charity.
