We are a large and rapidly growing group of pet parents and other concerned consumers who have trusted Nationwide Pet Insurance for years to care for our beloved pets. We chose Nationwide because they promised to care for our pets, to stand with us in times of need. Nationwide also promised that rates would not increase due to a pet’s age. Unfortunately, these promises have proven empty. Without warning or alternatives, they have canceled the Whole Pet Wellness plan for MORE THAN 100,000 pets nationally, leaving families without the protection they were promised.

Pre-Existing Conditions and Abandoned Pets

Many of our pets have been covered by Nationwide since they were babies. Now, they are at risk. For those whose pets are being treated for serious health issues, this is a life-and-death situation. Any medical issues developed under Nationwide’s coverage are now considered pre-existing conditions, making them uninsurable and vulnerable. Nationwide's decision to cancel the Whole Pet Wellness plan without allowing loyal customers to convert to other plans is particularly callous, leaving pet parents helpless and pets abandoned.

The True Cost of Unethical Practices

Our pets are not just animals; they are cherished members of our families. They deserve the consistent, reliable healthcare promised when we signed up with Nationwide. This decision reveals the true cost of Nationwide's unethical practices. Had we known Nationwide’s commitment to our pets was so superficial and based only on profit, we would have made a different choice.

Nationwide’s Financial Success Amidst Consumer Betrayal

Nationwide claims the decision to drop the Whole Pet Wellness program is based on increased costs and inflation. Yet, we continued to pay high premiums while also experiencing increased costs and inflation. Meanwhile, Nationwide, a Fortune 100 company, reported a record $60.3 billion in revenue (The Columbus Dispatch) and over a billion dollars in net operating income (Nationwide 2023 Annual Report). As CEO Kirt Walker stated in The Columbus Dispatch: "For Nationwide, our diverse portfolio of businesses enabled us to thrive while many peers struggled to deliver bottom-line results." This statement is tone-deaf in the context of terminating coverage for over 100,000 pets.

Call to Action

In the strongest possible terms, we urge Nationwide Pet Insurance to honor their public commitments to pet health and wellness. We demand they allow current customers with Whole Pet Wellness policies the option to convert to other plans, maintaining coverage for any conditions developed under their current policy. By doing this, Nationwide will not only honor their original promise to pet parents but also help preserve our trust—something infinitely more valuable than any policy and currently lost.

Consumers Deserve Better

Money and profits are important to a business, but businesses cannot thrive without consumers. Over 100,000 families now know they can’t trust Nationwide. Nationwide has historically said, “Nationwide is on your side.” How ironic is this given their recent decision? It’s only a matter of time before hundreds of thousands more see what Nationwide is doing and make different decisions about coverage for their pets, homes, and cars.
