Our beloved 2.5-year-old Great Dane, Papas, is facing an immediate risk of being euthanized on August 22, 2026. The crux of the issue stems from an initial bite incident that was erroneously categorized as more severe than warranted. Due to this misclassification, Papas' second bite incident is now being unjustly treated as a death sentence. The deputy managing this case lacks the necessary experience in canine behavior assessment to make such a life-altering decision.

The City of Modesto, California, must utilize The Dunbar's Dog Bite Scale more judiciously and accurately, thereby ensuring that evaluations are carried out by professionals who are competent to do so. We propose that Modesto hire a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant to analyze, investigate, and assess dogs involved in bite incidents comprehensively and accurately. Such measures would ensure a more just evaluation process, preventing tragic miscarriages of justice like the one Papas faces.

In addition to proper evaluation, the City must also be obligated to exhaust all non-lethal options before passing any terminal judgement on these dogs. There's a need for compassion and balanced judgement, which includes providing avenues for rehabilitation and behavioral training, not just punitive measures.

Statistically, most dog bites are misinterpreted due to lack of expert assessment, according to dog behavior experts. Relying on opinions from underqualified individuals can lead to irreversible decisions.
