I am a resident of Fort Saskatchewan, AB, Canada, and I am outraged by Mayor Gale Katchur's comments which seem to trivialize the lives of cats. As an animal lover and advocate, these remarks are not only deeply offensive, they also insinuate a broader disregard for animal welfare in our community.

Our city's leadership should be held to a high standard of respect and care for all members of our community, both human and animal. Mayor Katchur's casual attitude towards the killing of cats not only goes against our community values, but it also ignores the fact that pets are considered family members by many. Additionally, the American Veterinary Medical Association suggests that cats and other pets play a significant role in promoting human emotional health and wellbeing (AVMA, 2017).

Furthermore, animal cruelty is a punishable offence under Canadian law (Bill C-84, 2019). Any dismissal or endorsement of behavior that harms animals is unacceptable, especially from those in positions of power, like our mayor.

It is time for a leadership change that reflects and respects the values of our community. We, the community of Fort Saskatchewan, AB, Canada, demand that Mayor Gale Katchur resigns as a consequence for her careless comments about cats' lives.
