Demand Manitoba Public Insurance to Release MMIWG2S License Plates

The Issue

As an indigenous woman, I am deeply connected to my community. I work tirelessly in three jobs, volunteer regularly, and am on the verge of graduating from university. Despite these contributions to society, I often feel overlooked and unsupported by the institutions that should be advocating for me and others like me. This is why we must address one particular issue that symbolizes this disconnect - the unavailability of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Girls and Two-Spirited (MMIWG2S) license plates from Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI).

For years now, MPI has claimed on their website that these MMIWG2S license plates are available for purchase. Yet despite this promise, they have failed to make them accessible or supported. This is not just about a license plate; it's about recognition, awareness, and support for our indigenous communities.

The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Girls and Two-Spirit in Canada found that indigenous women are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada - a statistic that is both shocking and heartbreaking. The introduction of MMIWG2S license plates would serve as a constant reminder of this crisis while also demonstrating solidarity with those affected.

We call upon MPI to fulfill their promise by making MMIWG2S license plates available for purchase immediately. In doing so they would contribute towards National Truth and Reconciliation efforts while helping advocate for missing persons within our communities.

We are valuable members of society who deserve equality and equity just like anyone else. Let us not be forgotten or ignored any longer! Sign this petition today if you believe in justice for all citizens regardless of their cultural background.
