The Issue

Growing up in Pikeville, KY, I’ve always believed in the values of safety, trust, and fairness. However, recent events have left our community anxious and divided. Instances where citizens have been allegedly assaulted by officers, and where officers themselves have been harmed in the line of duty have become all too common. Each incident seems to deepen the divide between our law enforcement officers and the community they are meant to serve. It's clear that we must take action to rebuild trust and ensure safety for everyone in our beloved Pikeville.

The solution is as clear as it is necessary: police body cameras. These indispensable tools serve a dual purpose. First and foremost, they ensure transparency and accountability on both sides. By providing an unbiased account of interactions between police officers and the public, body cameras safeguard against false accusations and misconduct, while also protecting officers from unjust allegations.

For evidence, we can look at numerous cities across the United States that have already implemented body camera programs. Cities like Phoenix and New Orleans have reported decreases in complaints against officers, as well as reductions in the use of force. These statistics send a powerful message about the positive potential of body camera technology: it builds trust.

By equipping all police officers with body cameras, we are investing in a safer Pikeville. The cameras would act as silent witnesses, providing clarity in potentially murky situations. Officers would be able to work with the assurance that unbiased evidence can highlight their professionalism and dedication to serving the community, while citizens would feel more confident about their interactions with law enforcement.

This petition isn’t about blaming anyone. It's about protecting each other. If we truly care about safety and trust in Pikeville, equipping our police force with body cameras should be at the top of our list. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and to every community member to ensure that our town is as safe as it can be.

Join me in asking the city leaders to take a stand for transparency, accountability, and mutual trust. **Sign this petition to demand that mandatory body cameras are implemented for all Pikeville Police Officers.** Together, we can make a difference.
