Demand Lexington, Oklahoma Officials to Improve Conditions at the Local Animal Shelter
The Issue
I am a proud owner of rescue dogs and it breaks my heart to see the conditions in which our furry friends are kept at the Lexington animal shelter. The situation is dire and unsanitary, far from the loving environment these innocent creatures deserve.
The shelter is currently overcrowded with animals living in cramped spaces, leading to health issues and stress among them, and the unnecessary euthanasia of dogs, including puppies. They are kept in inadequate conditions including but not limited to; limited outside time, wet concrete ground covered in urine and feces, causing many dogs to have sores and infestations that go untreated, lack of clean food and water, lack of proper vet care. According to a report by The Humane Society of the United States, overcrowding in animal shelters can lead to increased disease transmission and behavioral problems (source: Humane Society). This is not just about providing adequate space for these animals; it's about ensuring their health and well-being.
Moreover, there have been numerous complaints regarding lack of proper medical care for sick animals at this shelter. It's unacceptable that in a country where approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year (source: ASPCA), we still fail our pets in providing them with basic healthcare.
We call upon Lexington officials to take immediate action - either build an adequate shelter and hire staff that will properly care for the dogs or surrender these dogs so they can be placed into better care elsewhere.
This petition isn't just about improving an institution; it's about saving lives - lives that bring joy, companionship, and unconditional love into ours every single day. Please sign this petition today; let us give back some love by ensuring they live their lives with dignity and respect they deserve.
