Demand Legislation to Prohibit Public Sale of Fireworks; Endorse Licensed and Supervised Displays Only
The Issue
The sudden, loud noises of fireworks can be traumatizing for many individuals, including those on the autism spectrum, and our beloved pets. This issue resonates deeply with me as I have seen the effect of unplanned fireworks on autistic individuals and pets, inducing fear and causing undue distress.
Statistics from The National Autistic Society indicate that 85% of autistic people find the unpredictable noises of fireworks distressing to the point of being traumatising. Similarly, British Vets report that loud noises like these can evoke severe anxiety in pets, often leading to self-inflicted injuries, lost pets, and even fatalities. This is an alarming concern that needs immediate action.
Our petition seeks to propose a ban on the public sale of fireworks, which currently contributes to unauthorised and potentially harmful firework displays. Instead, we demand the government insist on licensed displays only, run by trained professionals who can ensure a safe and controlled environment.
Given these alarming facts and the personal experiences of many, it is time we shift to an empathetic stance that safeguards the wellbeing of all. It is crucial to achieve a balance between tradition and safety, enjoyment and empathy. We must hold our legislators accountable for ensuring that everyone can enjoy celebrations without harm or distress. Please support this cause. Sign our petition.
