Like many others, I contributed to the GoFundMe launched by Brenay Kennard Mayo with the intention of undergoing a breast reduction surgery. We believed that our contributions would aid in improving Brenay's health and quality of life. It came to light that Brenay decided not to undergo the procedure and instead kept the funds without offering refunds to her supporters.

Even when confronted about the disbursed money, Brenay continued to mislead us claiming she had updated her donors — an update that was neither transparent nor accurate. Devastatingly, it was evident that she lied when the doctor scheduled to perform the surgery disclosed that he had advised her to lose weight before proceeding with any surgical procedure.

It is a distressing fact that occurrences like these are not isolated incidents. In fact, roughly 10% of crowdfunded medical campaigns may be fraudulent according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). This underscores the urgent need for proper and enforceable regulations within crowdfunding platforms to curb such forms of deceit.

It is an unfortunate truth that Brenay Kennard Mayo exploited the goodwill of thousands of people for personal gain, profiting from the kindness of her supporters who thought they were aiding in her medical journey. This fight is not only about reclaiming the misappropriated funds but also about standing up against deception and holding those engaging in fraudulent practices accountable.
