Demand Labour keeps its Pre-Election Promises on Animal Welfare

Demand Labour keeps its Pre-Election Promises on Animal Welfare
The Issue
In June 2024 Labour's Environment Secretary, Steve Reed, vehemently promised in his pre-election speech (video/Facebook 8 June), that, if elected, a Labour Govt would 'introduce the biggest boost to animal welfare in a generation' and, 7 months on, nothing has been done. Labour has, however, decided to ignnore the science and continue the 'ineffective' (Labours own description), inhumane and costly badger culls and have openly supported the cruel breeding and shooting of pheasants. Labour has always put themselves forward as the party for animal welfare but no sign so far. Steve Reed promised to end trail hunting where terrorised foxes are still being chased and torn apart, to end the illegal smuggling of animals into the UK, end illegal puppy farming, end the sale of dogs with painfully cropped ears, ban the use of snare traps, ban the importation of heavily pregnant dogs and cats, ban the import of trophies from slaughtered endangered animals, accelerate the phasing out of certain animals in the testing of products. All these pre-election promises have yet to be 'mentioned', let alone honoured. Urgent action is needed by this government to prove that their values are different to the last. We need action NOW.
