Demand LA County Reinstate Rent Gouging Protections for Palisades Fire Survivors

Demand LA County Reinstate Rent Gouging Protections for Palisades Fire Survivors
The Issue
Two thirds of Palisades Fire survivors are still displaced. Their rent protections just expired. And three LA County supervisors let it happen.
On May 29, LA County's ban on post-fire rent gouging quietly expired after Supervisors Kathryn Barger, Janice Hahn and Holly Mitchell abstained from a vote to extend it. Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Hilda Solis voted to keep protections in place through June 27. Three abstentions were enough to kill the motion.
The ban had prohibited landlords from raising rents more than 10% above pre-fire levels and capped rents on previously unlisted properties at 200% of fair market value. Without it, thousands of fire survivors renting temporary housing have no protection from uncapped rent increases.
The timing could not be worse. According to a survey of more than 2,000 fire survivors released in May, 38% have already exhausted their temporary housing insurance or expect to soon. Among households earning $50,000 or less, nearly 80% said they could not afford housing for more than three months once that coverage ends.
These are not wealthy people with options. These are families waiting to rebuild their homes who are now being hit from two directions at once — losing their insurance coverage and losing their rent protections simultaneously.
Supervisor Horvath called her colleagues' inaction deeply disappointing. So do we.
Sign this petition to demand the LA County Board of Supervisors reconvene and reinstate rent gouging protections for Palisades Fire survivors before more families are forced out of their temporary homes.
